How Does DAB Radio Work? DAB+ in Your Car Explained

E-CAN DAB receiver kit with branded receiver, active film antenna and cable

A practical guide to digital radio, DAB+ reception and installing a USB receiver on a compatible Android head unit.

Digital radio can bring more listening choices to your daily drive. Before choosing an adapter, it helps to understand what the broadcast technology does, where it works and what your head unit needs. This guide connects those basics with an installation walkthrough for the E-CAN receiver kit shown here.

What is DAB radio, and how does it work?

DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting. A transmitter sends digitally encoded radio programmes over the air to an antenna and receiver. Several services can share a broadcast package called a multiplex, or ensemble. The receiver separates the service you select and decodes its audio for playback.

DAB+ uses a more efficient audio codec, HE-AAC v2, within the DAB family. A receiver must support the format used by the station; an older DAB-only radio should not be assumed to decode DAB+ services. These definitions are explained in the WorldDAB technical glossary.

What can DAB+ add to your drive?

Where services are available, DAB+ can offer additional stations and straightforward station selection. A scan builds a list of the services the receiver can find, so you can choose a station by name rather than remembering its frequency. Programme text and slideshow images may also accompany the audio, depending on the broadcaster, receiver and app. See WorldDAB's introduction to DAB+.

Digital reception does not guarantee better sound for every station. The broadcaster's codec, bitrate and source material affect the result, alongside your car's audio system. WorldDAB's bitrate guidance explains the trade-off between audio quality and the capacity available for services. Treat “digital” as a transmission format, rather than a promise of lossless or CD-quality audio.

DAB+, FM or internet radio: what is different?

Three ways to listen in the car
Listening method Connection What to check
DAB / DAB+ Digital terrestrial radio broadcast Local services, compatible receiver and suitable antenna
FM Analogue radio broadcast FM tuner, antenna and station coverage
Internet radio An online stream through an app or service Internet connection, app support and applicable data costs

Receiving an over-the-air DAB+ broadcast does not require mobile data or an internet connection. Downloading an app, updating software or opening an online feature is a separate activity. The German DAB+ information service's FAQ explains this distinction.

Check coverage before choosing an upgrade

Look up the stations and coverage for the places where you actually drive. A service available in one city or country may not be available on another route. Start with your local broadcaster's current reception information, then test at the vehicle.

Weak DAB+ reception can produce silence or missing stations rather than the familiar hiss of analogue radio. The ABC's reception guide recommends checking coverage and service disruptions, rescanning, and investigating interference or antenna reception. A new USB adapter cannot create a broadcast signal where there is no usable service.

Meet the E-CAN USB DAB receiver kit

The photographed kit contains a receiver and an active film antenna with an SMA connection. It is intended for a compatible Android car head unit running the receiver's matching DAB application. It is a radio reception accessory; a CarPlay or Android Auto USB socket alone does not establish compatibility.

The supplied leaflet lists DAB/DAB+ reception, Band III tuning at 170.0–239.0 MHz, automatic station searching, a channel list, signal-strength display, and DLS text / SLS slideshow support. The antenna interface is listed as SMA with 5 V output for the active antenna. Displayed information depends on the station and the supported app.

Before ordering or fitting, send E-CAN your head-unit model, Android system information and a photo of the USB connections. Confirm the correct receiver version, matching APK and supported USB data port. Although the leaflet names Android 4.4.4 or later, the Android version alone does not guarantee that a particular unit will work.

How to install the receiver

Four installation steps: install the matching DAB APK, connect the film antenna to the receiver and the receiver to USB data, scan and test, then secure the antenna.

1. Install the matching DAB application

Park safely and obtain the APK supplied for this receiver. The leaflet describes transferring it on a USB drive or TF card, then installing it on the Android head unit. Use the supported method for your unit. If the app is missing or installation fails, contact E-CAN or your head-unit supplier for the correct package and instructions.

2. Connect the antenna and receiver

Attach the antenna's SMA plug to the receiver, then connect the receiver to the head unit's supported USB data port. A charging-only port or cable will not provide the required data connection. If an extension is needed, use a good-quality data cable and keep it short; the supplied leaflet recommends less than 100 cm. Open the matching DAB app after connection.

3. Scan and test before sticking the antenna

Run a station scan in a known coverage area. With the vehicle stationary, temporarily position the antenna and compare reception before removing its adhesive backing. The leaflet suggests testing reception outside the vehicle first and then finding a suitable position inside. Confirm that the app detects the receiver and that stations play reliably before committing to a permanent mounting position.

4. Mount the antenna and secure the cable

Follow the installation guidance for the supplied active film antenna and the vehicle. Keep the driver's view clear and route the cable away from airbag deployment paths, pedals and moving parts. If the antenna's contact or grounding requirements are unclear, ask the supplier or an installer before fixing it in place. Finish with another scan and reception check.

If something does not work

  • The app cannot find the receiver: confirm the matching APK, supported USB data port and head-unit compatibility. Check the USB connection and remove an unnecessary extension during diagnosis.
  • No stations appear: verify local DAB/DAB+ coverage, check the antenna connection and rescan with the vehicle parked in a suitable test location.
  • Audio drops out: compare reception at another covered location and review antenna placement and nearby interference. Do not assume a stronger-looking signal icon proves every service will play continuously.
  • Station text or pictures are missing: these require broadcaster data and app support; their absence alone does not prove that audio reception is faulty.

Frequently asked questions

Can this adapter add DAB+ to any car?

Check the installed head unit first. This kit needs a compatible Android unit, its matching application and a working USB data connection. Factory radio compatibility must be confirmed separately.

Will it replace FM?

This receiver adds a DAB/DAB+ listening option. Keep using the head unit's existing FM or other audio sources when appropriate. Automatic switching between DAB and FM is not established by the supplied product leaflet.

Do I need to buy a different antenna?

The photographed kit includes an active film antenna. Start by confirming and testing the supplied parts. Ask E-CAN before substituting an antenna, connector or power arrangement.
